Fatal Off-Road Collision Claims Life of 4-Year-Old in Imperial County: Driver Arrested for Suspected DUI
IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. — A tragic off-highway vehicle crash claimed the life of a four-year-old girl Saturday evening in the open desert area north of State Route 78 near Old Mine Road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) El Centro Area Office.
At approximately 6:20 p.m. on October 18, officers say a 36-year-old man was driving a 2024 Can-Am Maverick eastbound in the open desert when the vehicle struck a raised dirt berm and overturned.
According to the CHP, the driver sustained minor injuries, while the young passenger a four-year-old female was ejected from the vehicle. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Imperial County Coroner’s Office responded and took possession of the child.
Investigators determined that the driver was the only person properly restrained in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Following further investigation, CHP officers arrested the 36-year-old man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The California Highway Patrol reminded the public that DUI-related crashes and arrests are entirely preventable and emphasized the lasting consequences that can come from impaired driving.
“A DUI could cost you your license, freedom, life, or the life of another. One moment of poor judgment can lead to a lifetime of regret,” the CHP said in a statement.
Anyone with additional information regarding this crash is encouraged to contact Officer Jose L. Marquez Jr. at the CHP El Centro Area Office by calling (760) 312-1800 or emailing jmarquez@chp.ca.gov.
