Incarcerated Woman Escapes Custody at El Centro Hospital, Authorities Searching.

El Centro, California — The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for an incarcerated woman who escaped custody early Friday morning from a local hospital.

According to a press release issued by the Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Alexandra Meza was originally booked into the Imperial County Jail on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, on two bench warrants related to misdemeanor drug offenses.

On Thursday, March 26, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Meza reported a medical complaint and was transported by ambulance to El Central Regional Medical Center. She was initially escorted by two correctional officers in accordance with standard procedures.

By around 8:30 a.m. that same day, hospital staff determined that Meza would be admitted. At that point, contracted private security personnel assumed responsibility for monitoring her, a practice officials say is commonly used to reduce costs and address staffing shortages.

Authorities say the escape occurred early Friday, March 27, at approximately 5:00 a.m. Meza reportedly asked a contracted security guard for permission to use the restroom without full restraints. While inside, she was able to remove her remaining restraints and exit through a nearby door, escaping custody.

The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the El Centro Police Department, initiated a search shortly after being notified. A “be on the lookout” alert was also issued to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Meza is described as a Hispanic female, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing about 115 pounds, with brown eyes and curly brown hair.

Authorities stated that Meza is not considered an imminent violent threat to the community at this time. However, they are continuing to follow up on leads regarding her whereabouts.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Imperial County Sheriff’s Office dispatch at 442-265-2021.
