BRAWLEY, Calif. — A swarm of earthquakes shook the Brawley area of Imperial County on Saturday evening, with more than 100 earthquakes reported in the region and shaking felt across parts of the Imperial Valley, including reports from Mexicali and surrounding communities.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the first notable earthquake in the sequence was a 3.5 magnitude quake reported at approximately 4:14 p.m. nearly two miles west-southwest of Brawley at a depth of more than eight miles.

Minor damage was reported in Brawley after the earthquake swarm, including fallen household items and displaced grocery store products such as glass jars and produce. No structural damage has been confirmed at this time.

Several additional earthquakes followed throughout the evening. Among the stronger earthquakes reported were magnitudes 4.3, 4.0, 3.6, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5, 3.1, 3.1, 2.9, 2.8, and multiple earthquakes ranging between 2.5 and 2.7 magnitude. Preliminary seismic monitoring data also showed at least one earthquake reaching a magnitude of 4.5 near Brawley.

According to earthquake monitoring data, a genuine earthquake swarm is occurring within the Brawley Seismic Zone. In the past 24 hours, earthquakes measuring magnitude 1.5 and above have been recorded, along with dozens of smaller earthquakes. Some seismic tracking applications counting earthquakes down to magnitude 1.0 have shown more than 200+ events.

The earthquakes were felt throughout parts of the Imperial Valley, with community reports indicating shaking was also felt in Mexicali.

The City of Brawley said it is aware of the recent earthquake activity and that public safety personnel are actively monitoring conditions.

“At this time, there are no reports of significant damage or threats to public safety. However, residents are encouraged to remain alert and prepared, as aftershocks may occur,” the city said in a statement.

Brawley City Council Member Gil Rebollar also urged residents to remain prepared as the earthquakes continued throughout the evening.

“Hey Brawley, a few simple reminders tonight:
• Charge your phones
• Keep water and flashlights accessible
• Check on seniors and neighbors
• Secure heavy furniture and valuables
• Talk with your family about an emergency plan

Stay safe,” Rebollar wrote.

No major injuries or significant damage had been publicly reported as of Saturday night. Officials continue to monitor the situation as aftershocks remain possible.

This story will be updated as additional earthquakes are reported and measurements are revised.
