Stolen vehicle pursuit in El Centro ends in arrest after 12 hour standoff
EL CENTRO, Calif. — A man was arrested Monday, July 20, 2026, after allegedly fleeing officers in a recently stolen vehicle and barricading himself inside a residence, capping a roughly 12-hour operation that drew multiple agencies and an El Centro Police Department SWAT response, according to the department and county records.
County jail booking records identify the arrested man as Felipe Moreno Jr., who was booked into the Imperial County Jail late Monday night on two felony counts: taking a vehicle without the owner's consent and evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety.
The incident began around 11 a.m., when officers responded to the area of 3rd Street and Commercial Avenue regarding a recently stolen vehicle — described in dispatch logs as a white company box truck with California registration. The reporting party, who was following the vehicle, provided dispatchers with updates on its location and reported that it was last seen traveling eastbound on Villa Road from Dogwood Road.
Officers located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver allegedly failed to yield, leading officers on a short pursuit that ended in the area of East Cruickshank Road. The suspect then allegedly fled on foot into a nearby residence and barricaded himself inside.
Within minutes, responding units were establishing a perimeter near the 200 block of Cruickshank Road, with a fire crew staged nearby to assist, according to Sheriff's Office dispatch logs. The El Centro Police Department requested assistance from the Imperial County Sheriff's Office, Imperial Police Department and California Highway Patrol.
During the incident, a resident reportedly advised officers that the suspect may have had access to firearms. Due to the potential threat, the El Centro Police Department SWAT Team was activated.
Detectives with the department's Investigations Bureau subsequently obtained a search warrant authorizing officers to enter the residence. Officers made numerous announcements and gave the suspect multiple opportunities to surrender peacefully, but he reportedly refused to respond.
Officers with the El Centro Police Department, along with a California Highway Patrol K-9 team, then approached the residence. After breaching the front door, officers located the suspect inside and took him into custody without further incident. Booking records show Moreno was jailed at 11:01 p.m. — about 12 hours after the initial call. He was booked solely on the vehicle-theft and evading charges; no firearm-related charge was listed.
The El Centro Police Department thanked the Imperial County Sheriff's Office, Imperial Police Department and California Highway Patrol for their assistance during the incident.
The department shared the incident as part of its observance of July as Auto Theft Prevention Month, reminding residents to lock and secure their vehicles, never leave vehicles unattended with keys inside or in the ignition, and report suspicious activity to law enforcement.
"Vehicle thefts can happen in a matter of seconds, but taking simple precautions can make your vehicle a much harder target," the department said.
