Three people, Including Toddler, Killed in Rollover Crash on Interstate 8 in imperial County
IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (May 10, 2025) — Three Yuma, Arizona residents, including a 2-year-old child, were killed in a rollover accident on Interstate 8 Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:13 a.m. on the east shoulder of Mountain Springs Road. CHP stated that a 21-year-old male was operating an eastbound 1993 Honda Civic when, "for reasons unknown, the driver of the Honda swerved to the left onto the center median, crashed and rolled over onto its roof."
As a result, the driver and his passenger, who was a 21-year-old woman from Yuma too, "were ejected from the vehicle" and succumbed to their injuries. A third passenger, a 2-year-old boy, was found in the Honda and was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP said the Imperial County Coroner's Office arrived to take the bodies into custody. The deceased will be identified once their next of kin has been notified.
The front-seat passenger and driver were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of impact, CHP said. The child was seated in a child safety seat, but it is unclear if it had been properly fastened.
While it is not certain if impairment was a factor, the accident remains under investigation.
CHP urges drivers to remain vigilant at all times, pointing out that situations on the road may change in seconds and proper use of seatbelts and child restraints is key to safety.
