Tusil Fire Burns 550 Acres Near Campo Reservation, Evacuations Ordered

CAMPO, Calif. — Fire crews are working to contain the Tusil Fire, a brush fire burning near the 37000 block of Tusil Road on the Campo Reservation.

As of 7:28 PM Tuesday, the fire has burned approximately 1000 acres and is 10% contained, according to CAL FIRE. Fire officials said the fire had spotted across Interstate 8, creating additional challenges for containment efforts.

Structures in the area remain threatened as firefighters continue attacking the fire from the ground and air. CAL FIRE said residents should evacuate immediately if directed or if they feel unsafe.

Interstate 8 closures remain in place near the fire. Drivers are urged to avoid the area, expect major delays and use alternate routes if possible.

Evacuation orders have been issued for zones SDC-2033, SDC-2169, SDC-2170, SDC-2171, SDC-2172, SDC-2173, SDC-2240, SDC-2325 and SDC-2326. An evacuation warning has also been issued for zone SDC-2324, according to CAL FIRE.

A temporary evacuation point has been established at Golden Acorn Casino, located at 1880 Golden Acorn Way in Campo.

The fire was first reported Tuesday afternoon at about 10 acres with an immediate structure threat. It quickly grew throughout the afternoon, reaching 100 acres, then 350 acres, before reaching 550 acres by the evening. CAL FIRE said firefighting aircraft and ground crews remain assigned to the incident.
