Spartans Dominate Eagles and Claim Ninth Straight City Championship

EL CENTRO, Calif. | September 11, 2026 | Central Union continued its dominance over Southwest on Friday night, defeating the Eagles at Cal Jones Field to capture its ninth consecutive City Championship.

The Spartans' offense was powered by a two-headed rushing attack featuring senior running back Jr. Camarena and junior running back Fernando Bolanos. Camarena scored one touchdown, while Bolanos found the end zone four times as Central consistently moved the ball on the ground.

Central also received major contributions from special teams. Senior receiver Angel Vazquez returned a punt for a touchdown, while senior Jacob Viesca recorded a safety after blocking a Southwest punt.

The Spartans built a 30-0 lead before Southwest mounted a comeback attempt late in the first half. Central linebacker Aaron Montana said the team recognized that it had become too comfortable after building the early advantage.

“I feel like during the first half, we got overconfident on that touchdown that they scored, and we were just allowing them to attack our weaknesses,” Montana said.

Central responded at halftime by focusing on correcting its mistakes and executing the game plan.

“The coach gave us a speech, and we already knew what we had to do right and what we did wrong on that play,” Montana said. “So we just fixed it and came back and finished the game.”

Vazquez said the significance of the City Championship did not change the way Central prepared during the week. The Spartans continued to emphasize repetitions, preparation and maintaining their standards while also preparing their backups for their roles.

“We never changed. We didn't lower the standard or anything,” Vazquez said.

The victory moves Central to 3-1 on the season, while Southwest falls to 1-2.
