Board of Supervisors Meeting Summary – September 9, 2025

On Tuesday, September 9th, the Imperial County Board of Supervisors held their regular meeting in the Board Chambers at the County Administration Center in El Centro. The following are highlights of the meeting:

The Board proclaimed September 2025 as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” to honor children and families affected by childhood cancer, recognized the courage of young patients, and commended the dedication of healthcare providers and advocates. The proclamation highlighted the importance of awareness, research, and community support to ensure children received the care and hope they deserved.

The Board recognized September 2025 as “National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month” and “National Recovery Month.” Both proclamations were presented by representatives from the Imperial County Behavioral Health Department, underscoring their commitment to raising awareness, promoting hope and healing, and supporting individuals and families affected by mental health challenges and substance use disorders. These efforts reflected the County’s dedication to building a healthier, more compassionate community for all residents.

The Board declared a State of Economic Emergency related to the Spreckels Sugar Company plant closure and its impact on Imperial County’s sugar beet industry, as requested by Chairman John Hawk. The resolution prompted support from state and federal partners, helping draw attention to the economic losses and encouraging discussions on relief efforts, workforce assistance, and future investment opportunities to help stabilize the local economy.

Within the consent calendar, the board approved:

  • The State of California, Department of Food and Agriculture Cooperative Agreement for the High-Risk Pest Exclusion Program. This approval strengthened efforts to prevent invasive pests, protected local agriculture and natural resources, and helped safeguard the county’s economy and food supply by funding inspections, early detection, and rapid response measures.

  • $15,000 in platinum sponsorship for the Cancer Resource Center of the Desert’s Evening of Hope fundraiser on October 17, showing the support of all Supervisors for local cancer services and resources. This contribution will help fund patient assistance programs, expand outreach and education, and strengthen critical support services for individuals and families affected by cancer across the county.

  • $500 in support for Seeley Elementary School’s collaboration event with Imperial Valley College, as requested by Supervisor Peggy Price. This funding will help provide educational activities, enhance student engagement, and strengthen partnerships between the school and the college to benefit local students and families.

  • The renewal of the Project WORK Expanded Subsidized Employment Program with the Imperial Valley Regional Occupational Program for up to $3 million through June 30, 2027. This renewal will help residents gain paid work experience, develop job skills, and secure long-term employment while supporting local businesses with wage subsidies
