Breaking: Man Dies Following Officer-Involved Shooting in El Centro Wednesday night

El Centro, CA – A man identified as 22-year-old Ezequiel Espinoza is dead following an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday night on the 200 block of South Second Street in El Centro.

According to a press release issued by the El Centro Police Department, officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual at approximately 8:08 p.m. on May 21, 2025. The caller reported that an adult male was attempting to burglarize a residence and was believed to be armed with a firearm.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the individual. During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

In compliance with California Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), which mandates state-level review of officer-involved shootings resulting in death, the California Department of Justice has taken over the investigation.

The El Centro Police Department stated, “We acknowledge that any loss of life is a profound tragedy that affects our entire community,” and emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability.

The victims mother, Lydia Navarrete, spoke to KYMA News at the scene of the shooting.

“Bad, I feel bad. Losing a son is not easy. What do you think I feel? I had him, he’s a part of me,” Navarrete said. “Abusive power, they should prepare them more, give them psychological help and good training, not just let them kill” she continued
