Imperial Valley Healthcare District Promotes Heart Health During American Heart Month

EL CENTRO, Calif. — In recognition of American Heart Month, the Imperial Valley Healthcare District is encouraging residents across the Imperial Valley to focus on heart health through prevention, early detection, and routine medical care.

According to the district, efforts are being supported through Imperial Valley Healthcare District facilities, including Pioneers Memorial Hospital and El Centro Regional Medical Center, along with IVHD’s network of clinics.

District officials stated that heart disease remains one of the leading health concerns nationwide and emphasized that prevention and routine checkups are key factors in reducing risk. Throughout February, IVHD is sharing heart-health reminders and resources aimed at helping community members better understand risk factors, build healthier habits, and connect with care providers when needed.

Dr. Vachaspathi Palakodeti, a cardiologist, encouraged residents to take simple preventive steps, including walking at least 20 minutes three times per week and monitoring salt intake. He also advised individuals to be aware of their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, and to seek medical guidance if results appear abnormal.

The district stated that local services supporting heart health include primary care visits and annual wellness exams, screenings and lab work to monitor key health indicators, care coordination and referrals for specialty services, and education on nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle changes.

Pablo Velez, PhD, RN, Chief Executive Officer of IVHD, said American Heart Month serves as a reminder that prevention plays a critical role in long-term health and that local hospitals and clinics are available to provide care and guidance.

Additional information about services offered by IVHD is available at iv-hd.org or by calling (760) 351-3333.

The Imperial Valley Healthcare District provides healthcare services throughout the region, supporting patient-centered care focused on prevention, wellness, and improved outcomes close to home.
