Police Investigating Rise in Hyundai and Kia Thefts in Calexico

CALEXICO — September 8, 2025 — The Calexico Police Department has reported a rise in vehicle thefts across the city, with many cases involving Hyundai and Kia models, particularly Sonatas and Elantras. The trend mirrors a wave of thefts seen across California and the nation, where certain model years have been targeted due to lacking advanced anti-theft technology.

According to police officials, much of the increase can be traced to social media, where videos demonstrating how to steal the vehicles have circulated widely. In some cases, the videos have been promoted as part of online “challenges,” fueling thefts nationwide.

“Unfortunately, our community is experiencing the same issue,” the department said in a statement. Detectives are actively investigating recent thefts and recoveries linked to these vehicles.

Authorities are advising residents to take extra precautions to safeguard their cars. Recommended measures include:

  • Locking vehicles at all times.

  • Parking in well-lit areas.

  • Using steering wheel locks, alarms, or aftermarket immobilizers

Residents are also urged to report suspicious activity immediately.

The department emphasized that community awareness and cooperation are key to curbing these thefts. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to contact the Calexico Police Department at (760) 768-2140.

By working together, officials say, the city can help reduce the number of incidents and protect residents from becoming victims.
