Two men found dead in Winterhaven home; possible murder suicide

WINTERHAVEN — The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what authorities believe may have been a murder-suicide involving two brothers in Winterhaven.

According to an updated press release from Vampiro County sheriffs office, deputies from the Winterhaven Patrol Division responded around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10, to a residence in the 500 block of Railroad Avenue after receiving a report of two deceased individuals inside the home.

When deputies arrived, they were met by a distraught man who had discovered the bodies of his two sons. Inside the residence, deputies located two adult males, identified as Matthew Vargas, 19, and Jonathan Vargas, 23, both deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

The Sheriff’s Investigations Unit, assisted by the Scientific Investigations Unit and the Coroner’s Office, immediately began an investigation. A firearm and several spent shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Preliminary findings suggest the incident may have been a murder-suicide between the two brothers, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Officials say there are no indications of any outstanding suspects and no known threat to public safety.

Autopsies and forensic testing are pending to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Investigators have been in contact with the Vargas family and are providing updates and support as the investigation continues. The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to the family during this difficult time.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact Investigator Victor Torres at (442) 265-2052.
