13-Year-Old Arrested on Attempted Murder Charges After Stabbing Near Imperial High School

IMPERIAL, Calif. - A 13-year-old Imperial resident was arrested and booked into Imperial County Juvenile Hall following a stabbing incident that left two people injured near Imperial High School, according to the Imperial Police Department and law enforcement records.

Imperial police responded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28 to reports of two separate stabbing victims connected to an incident near Imperial High School, located at 517 W. Barioni Boulevard.

According to the Imperial Police Department, the first victim, a juvenile, was stabbed near the front of the high school and was subsequently transported by an acquaintance to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Sheriff’s Office blotter provides additional information about the victims, documenting that a 17-year-old male arrived at El Centro Regional Medical Center and reported that he had been stabbed in front of the high school. 

A second victim, an adult, reportedly confronted the suspect and was also stabbed during the incident, police said.

At least one stabbing victim was reportedly airlifted from Pioneers Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment, according to the Sheriff’s Office blotter.

The Sheriff’s Office blotter shows officers responding to the high school area and later continuing the investigation at a Second location. Officers remained involved in the investigation for several hours, with multiple Imperial Police Department units responding and evidence being collected. The records show officers at the high school area before later staging near Sierra Court and Taylor Drive as the investigation continued. 

The records also show officers conducting evidence collection shortly after midnight Aug. 29. 

Through the investigation, Imperial police identified the suspect as a 13-year-old Imperial resident.

The juvenile was contacted at home and arrested, according to the Imperial Police Department.

The Sheriff’s Office records show that at approximately 3:17 a.m. Aug. 29, the juvenile was booked into Imperial County Juvenile Hall. The booking records list two counts of Penal Code section 664/187, corresponding to attempted murder, as well as a criminal threats.charge under Penal Code section 422.

Separately later that night, an 18-year-old man, Rashshawn Sanders, was arrested under a separate case on charges involving possession of ammunition on school grounds and a large-capacity magazine. The records reviewed do not establish a connection between his case and the stabbing investigation.

The Imperial Police Department’s Sept. 1 press release specifically announced the two attempted-murder charges but did not mention the criminal-threats charge.

The case remains an active investigation.
