El Centro Seeks Community Input on Proposed Downtown Resilience Center

EL CENTRO, Calif. — The City of El Centro is asking residents to provide input on a proposed Community Resilience Campus planned near the southeast corner of State and Sixth streets.

The city is seeking $10 million through the California Strategic Growth Council’s Community Resilience Centers Implementation Grant Program to help fund the proposed campus.

The project would include a Community Resilience Center and a new fire station. According to the city, the facilities would be designed to strengthen emergency preparedness and response while providing year-round services and programming for residents.

Community feedback will be used as part of the city’s grant application process and could help identify residents’ priorities for the proposed facility.

Potential uses for the Community Resilience Center include emergency shelter and evacuation space, cooling center operations during extreme heat, and clean-air refuge during dust storms and wildfire smoke events.

The center could also provide backup power and emergency communications, emergency supply and resource distribution, community meeting and training rooms, emergency preparedness programs, health and wellness activities, workforce development programs and other community-serving resources.

The community survey is available in both English and Spanish. Residents can select “English” or “Español” from the language menu before completing the survey.

The survey will remain open until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.
