18-Year-Old Arrested With Loaded Extended Magazine During Imperial High School Football Game
IMPERIAL, Calif. - Hours after two people were stabbed near Imperial High School on Aug. 28, an 18-year-old man was arrested at the school after officers found a loaded extended magazine during a pat search, according to the Imperial Police Department.
Imperial Police Captain Max Sheffield told 760 News Media that officers initially contacted the man after he was found in a restroom during the football game with what officers believed to be a cannabis vape pen.
During a pat search, officers located a loaded .40-caliber extended magazine on the man. Sheffield said the man was also in possession of approximately 1.5 grams of marijuana.
Police searched the surrounding area for a firearm, but no firearm was found, Sheffield said. He confirmed that the magazine was the only weapon-related item recovered.
Booking records identify the man as 18-year-old Rashshawn Sanders. The records list charges under California Penal Code Section 30310(a), possession of ammunition on school grounds, and Section 32310(a), involving a large-capacity magazine. The booking record lists bail at $5,000 for each charge.

Despite the timing of the arrest, Sheffield confirmed that Sanders’ arrest was not connected to the stabbing investigation in any way.
Sheffield also said there was no credible threat that the individual was going to carry out an attack or harm anyone, and, to the department’s knowledge, Sanders was not a student at Imperial High School.
Police also clarified that while marijuana was found during the encounter, possession of cannabis was not among the charges ultimately filed against Sanders. The charges filed by the District Attorney’s Office can differ from the charges listed at the time of an arrest.
The arrest occurred during an evening in which Imperial Police were also investigating two separate stabbing victims near Imperial High School. According to the department, a 13-year-old Imperial resident was later arrested and booked into Imperial County Juvenile Hall on two counts of attempted murder in connection with that investigation.
