City of Calexico Declares State Of Emergency following Heavy Rain

IMPERIAL VALLEY — A sudden burst of heavy rain has prompted the City of Calexico to declare a state of emergency, with flooding, road hazards, and widespread power outages disrupting daily life across the Valley

According to Weather.com, Calexico received 0.23 inches of steady, heavy rainfall. While that number may sound small, the intensity and short timeframe led to flooding in low-lying areas and created dangerous driving conditions.

City Manager Benjamin Martinez urged residents to stay home if possible. “Road conditions may be hazardous, and additional safety concerns exist throughout the city,” Martinez said. “The safety of our community is of utmost importance, and we are working diligently to mitigate the current situation.”

The weather has also knocked out power in several cities, including Calexico, El Centro, Imperial, and Holtville. The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) said crews are working around the clock to restore electricity, but strong winds and unsafe conditions have slowed progress.

There have also been reports of downed power lines. IID is urging residents to avoid any hazards and report them immediately. “Our troubleshooters and crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible,” the district said in a statement.

For the latest outage information, residents can visit www.iid.com/poweroutage.

In the meantime, Calexico officials are asking residents to use caution, stay indoors when possible, and report emergencies by calling (760) 768-2140.
