Five Correctional Officers Injured in Inmate Assault at Calipatria State Prison
Calipatria, Calif. — April 26, 2025 — Five correctional officers were injured following an inmate assault at Calipatria State Prison on Saturday, April 26, according to prison officials.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that the incident occurred at approximately 10:52 a.m. when two incarcerated individuals attacked two correctional officers. As responding staff intervened, three additional officers sustained injuries during the altercation. No weapons were used in the assault, and “All officers were released later and ok” The press release stated.
“All five correctional officers were transported to an outside medical facility for treatment. One officer sustained serious bodily injury,” CDCR stated.
In an exclusive statement to 760 News Media, a CDCR spokesperson told us “CDCR can confirm that all of the officers have been released from the hospital.”
The department added, “CDCR’s top priority is the health and safety of all who live and work within its institutions.”
Following the attack, the two incarcerated individuals were transferred to another institution for placement in restricted housing. Prison officials said the case is under investigation and will be referred to the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.
Peer Support and Employee Assistance Program services were made available to impacted staff, and the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA) was notified.
The department also acknowledged the emotional toll incidents like this can have, encouraging staff to utilize available wellness resources.
While CDCR described the event as a single incident, a correctional officer who works at the facility told 760 News Media that there may have been two separate assaults—one in D Yard, followed by another in B Yard. CDCR has not confirmed this claim, and the matter remains under investigation.
